March 2023 Member of the Month: Rebecca Wilcox

Meet our March Epic Member of the month Rebecca Wilcox!

Rebecca has been with FUELhouse and Molly on and off for more than 10 years!! From bootcamp with Molly, to a short stint at FH 1.0, Rebecca has truly seen the progression of FH. She came back to us by way of Foundations in June of 2021, and has been rocking group classes ever since. She’s a dedicated 7am'er with the once and a while 9am class thrown in. She recently started the Lifter small group series with Coach Sokol. She’s in the evening group on Tuesdays and Thursdays hanging with the evening peeps. We all love her attitude to keep going and trying different ways to continue moving.

Here are a few things our coaches had to say about Rebecca:

“Quiet and strong and consistent in the front corner. I enjoy her love of barbells and she’s always open to try and learn new skills. She’s definitely strong and stronger than I think she thinks she is! Can’t wait to hear her Stong Camp Lifter numbers!!” - Coach Kari

”I love having her in her corner spot in class 😉 . She’s always so easy to talk to, coachable, and has a great smile. Thanks for always showing up to work hard, safe and strong.” - Coach Hay

Name: Rebecca Wilcox

Pronoun(s): She/her

Occupation: Architect

IG: @marmotcannon

Where can you be found outside of the gym? What do you do for a living?

I work at CAST architecture in Fremont, on a range of community-oriented and residential projects. I love designing places that improve people’s lives, but my own true happy places are in the wilderness on a backpacking trip, or getting my hands dirty in a woodshop or pottery studio.

What are your hobbies?

See above!

What brought you to FH in the first place?

I’ve been training with Molly off and on since her bootcamps at Gasworks days (more than 10 years ago?!?!). I moved away from Seattle for a few years just after Fuelhouse 1.0 opened, and moved back just before the pandemic. When things started opening back up again I was really missing group classes so FH was top of my list.

How are we so lucky you picked us (what are your favorite things about FH)?

It’s more of a community than any gym I’ve ever been to. I love that all the coaches take the time to learn everyone’s name and always have modification suggestions for whatever challenges you have going on. Also love the variety of the workouts!

What sports or fitness things did you do before FH?

I am a big backpacker but unfortunately the season is pretty short, especially in the PNW. I have been to a lot of bootcamps/gyms/classes over the years to train in the off season.

What programs are you currently involved in at FH and why?

I do group classes because, while I like to do my own thing and modify as needed, it’s much more motivating to have people around me training too! Right now I’m in the 5x5 Strong Lifts class and I love being able to focus on a small set of skills week after week. Plus barbell is my favorite part of any class so getting to focus on that is so fun. It’s becoming something I like doing for its own sake and not just a training tool, which is really cool to have discovered that.

What goals are you working towards and/or what’s on your FH bucket list of things you’d like to accomplish?

This year I want to beat my numbers on the FH Strength Challenge from last year. Also I’m planning to hike the 165 mile Tahoe Rim Trail this summer and want to feel like that big ass backpack is no big deal!

What makes you commit to training even on days you don't feel like it?

Mostly knowing that as long as I can get myself to the gym the hard part is over. I always feel better during and after a class.

What's your favorite movement/exercise?

all things barbell

What have been your “bright spots” (PRs or accomplishments are you most proud of)?

I climbed Mount Rainier 15 years ago and that was the first time I realized I could do a really hard physical thing. Since then I’ve had enough physical/health setbacks to realize that just maintaining a level of fitness and learning about what’s best for my own body, while not as exciting, are actually way bigger wins. It’s an ongoing project!

How have these accomplishments affected your life?

The more I focus on maintenance and the day to day stuff, the better life gets. That being said, I do like having a goal like a big hike to work towards, because just “maintenance” is not always super motivating!

What is on your general bucket list for life?

Work less, play more

Tell us a little known fact about yourself or what’s something most people don’t know about you?

I was a physics and astronomy major in undergrad. I got to do research at the Arecibo radio telescope and also was one of many students who helped build pieces of the Large Hadron Collider, which discovered the Higgs Boson.

What's your favorite thing about being a FUELhouse member?

It’s just a very welcoming and comfortable place to be.

What was your first impression of FH?  How has that changed?

When I first visited FH2.0 I remember being so impressed by how friendly everyone is, and that hasn’t changed.

What advice do you have for new (or experienced!) new friends trying out FH?

Try all the things. Take classes from different coaches if you can. Mixing it up keeps things interesting.
