Name: Colleen McGarry

Pronoun(s): she/her

Occupation: Head of People

Where can you be found outside of the gym? What do you do for a living?

I work remotely as the head of people for two small tech companies. Otherwise, I can be found around my neighborhood, taking my monster puppy Phoebe for a walk, enjoying the farmers market, and tending to the flowers in our garden.

What are your hobbies?

Hiking, bird watching, e-biking, and trivia.

What brought you to FH in the first place?

I was looking for an inclusive gym where I could focus on getting stronger and having fun.

How are we so lucky you picked us (what are your favorite things about FH)?

My first favorite thing is Dre. My second favorite thing is Toast. I am so lucky to have been working out with Dre for the past 2.5 years. I've built kettlebell skills and just pulled a 275# sumo deadlift. Toast is cute, too.

What sports or fitness things did you do before FH?

I've hiked for a long time, and discovered strength training after a hiking injury. I've stuck with it, which is what brought me to Fuelhouse in the first place. I also like anything on or in the water (swimming, canoeing, snorkeling, drinking beer on a boat...).

What programs are you currently involved in at FH and why?

Personal training and individualized program design. I need both the focus and accountability. I also appreciate that Dre does all the hard work for me!

What goals are you working towards and/or what’s on your FH bucket list of things you’d like to accomplish?

I'm working on the Deep 6, and I want to do a 300# deadlift. I did just do my first (2) pushups!

What makes you commit to training even on days you don't feel like it?

Knowing that I'll feel better on the other side of having gone to the gym.

What's your favorite movement/exercise?

Sumo deadlifting. Pretty much any single leg exercise.

What have been your “bright spots” (PRs or accomplishments are you most proud of)?

I mentioned most of them already, but a 275# sumo deadlift, and two pushups!

How have these accomplishments affected your life?

Honestly, I feel better going to the gym, but I got to the gym for future me. So I don't feel like I've reaped the most benefits yet. Like, I definitely feel better and stronger now, but I'm really in it for the long haul. I want 75-year-old me to thank past me for going to the gym.

What is on your general bucket list for life?

See the Great Barrier Reef. Grow a bonsai tree from seed.

Tell us a little known fact about yourself or what’s something most people don’t know about you?

I make wedding cakes in my spare time.

What's your favorite thing about being a FUELhouse member?

It's a safe place to fail.

What was your first impression of FH?  How has that changed?

The people were nice. Turns out, they're still nice!
